Family: Serve receive and seams

Choose up to three drills, then let the builder complete and time your practice.

What players are learning

Recognize short and deep seam balls early and move with clear responsibility in serve receive.

01

Set it up

  1. Place two passers side by side and a target at the net.
  2. Name the passer on the left and the passer on the right from their view facing the server.
  3. A server works from the opposite court.
02

Run the drill

  1. Before serving, point to an obvious short seam and deep seam and ask the passers who owns each ball.
  2. Serve controlled balls into the seam: the right passer takes the short ball and the left passer takes the deep ball.
  3. Both players read and move; the responsible passer calls early while the other prepares to help with the next contact.
  4. Award a point for the correct responsibility, an early call, and a playable pass.
03

What to say

  • Short seam: right passer.
  • Deep seam: left passer.
  • The call confirms the rule—it does not change it.
04

How to score it

One point when the correct passer takes the seam ball, calls early, and sends a playable pass to the target.

05

Make it harder

  1. Begin with clearly short or deep controlled serves.
  2. Vary serve depth and direction so the passers must read the flight.
  3. Play the rally live after the seam pass.
