Family: Serve receive and seams

Choose up to three drills, then let the builder complete and time your practice.

What players are learning

Build a simple three-player serve-receive shape with one repeatable seam rule.

01

Set it up

  1. Mark left, middle, and right passing lanes with cones.
  2. Place a target near the setter position.
02

Run the drill

  1. Identify the left and right passer for each of the two seams.
  2. Servers send six balls across the lanes, including obvious short and deep seam balls.
  3. For either seam, the passer on the right takes short and the passer on the left takes deep.
  4. Passers call early, send the ball to the target, and recover to base after contact.
  5. Rotate one new passer in after each six-ball round.
03

What to say

  • See the server before adjusting.
  • Short to the right; deep to the left.
  • The call confirms the responsibility.
  • Pass high enough for the team to organize.
04

Make it harder

  1. Begin with servers announcing short or deep.
  2. Remove the announcement and vary the serve.
  3. Play the rally live after every pass.

Where everyone starts

Passers share the court in lanes and send every playable ball toward the target.

Court setup for this drillThree passers form a shallow arc on one side of the net. A server sends the ball over the net toward them, and they pass to a target near the net.servepassServerP1P2P3Target
