What players are learning
Learn what separates a good pass from a merely playable one.
Set it up
- Tape a target zone at the setter's spot.
- Three passers receive from a live server or the coach.
Run the drill
- Every pass is graded out loud on a three-point scale.
- Three means the setter can run anything. Zero is an ace.
- The team must average 2.0 across 20 serves.
What to say
- A two keeps us alive.
- A three wins us the point.
- High and to the target.
How to score it
Standard 3-point scale — 3 = setter can run anything, 2 = playable, 1 = kept alive, 0 = ace or over. Team must average 2.0 over 20 serves.
Make it harder
- Raise the target average to 2.3, which is roughly where a competitive middle school team should live.
