What players are learning
Build a complete beginner serve-receive routine one observable behavior at a time.
Set it up
- Place one or two passers in serve receive with a target about five feet off the net.
- Use controlled servers from a distance that produces readable balls.
Run the drill
- Complete three successful serves at each rung before adding the next behavior: call early, move behind the ball, send a playable pass to the target, then organize a second contact.
- A miss keeps the group on the same rung; it does not erase earlier progress.
- Rotate servers, passers, and the target after each completed rung.
What to say
- See the server and ball flight.
- Call early, then move.
- Give the next player time and space.
How to score it
Climb all four rungs before the 12-minute block ends. Record the highest completed rung and try to improve next time.
Make it harder
- Begin with one passer and controlled serves.
- Add a second passer and apply the team seam rule.
- Play the ball through a third contact instead of catching the second.
