Serve–Pass–Set–Catch
A controlled serve becomes a pass, a set, and a catch at an attacking target so beginners connect all three contacts.

What players are learning
Connect serve receive to an organized second contact and a useful third-contact target.
Set it up
- Place a server across the net, one or two passers in serve receive, a setter target, and a catcher near an attacking position.
- Move the serving line forward when players need a more readable ball.
Run the drill
- Serve a controlled ball to the receiving group.
- The passer sends a playable first contact to the setter, who sets toward the catcher at the attacking target.
- The group scores only when all three contacts are organized, then rotates jobs after five serves.
What to say
- Pass high enough to organize.
- The non-passer gets ready for the next contact.
- Send the set where a hitter could use it.
How to score it
One point for a playable pass and a second point when the set reaches the attacking target. Play to 10.
Make it harder
- Catch the set at first so the sequence stays clear.
- Replace the catch with a controlled standing attack over the net.
- Play out the rally after the third contact.
