What players are learning
Give each passer frequent reads against real serves without needing a full team or full-court formation.
Set it up
- Divide the court lengthwise into two passing lanes when space allows.
- Put one server across the net, one passer responsible for half the court, and one target near the setter area in each lane.
Run the drill
- The server sends five controlled serves anywhere in the passer’s half court.
- The passer reads the server, moves, and sends a playable ball to the target.
- Rotate server to passer, passer to target, and target to server after five serves.
What to say
- Watch the server before the ball crosses.
- Move early enough to finish balanced.
- Pass high and off the net.
How to score it
The passer earns one point when the target can play the ball after moving one step or less; the server earns one for an ace or unplayable pass.
Make it harder
- Move developing servers closer to preserve successful contacts.
- Use both half-court lanes at once to increase repetitions.
- Let the target set the pass to a catcher before rotating.
