Youth Volleyball Game-Day Guide for First-Time Coaches

Prepare before leaving home

Use a repeatable checklist so administrative uncertainty does not consume the team’s warm-up.

• Current roster, emergency contacts, match location, arrival instructions, and required credentials.
• League-specific lineup, scorekeeping, substitution, libero, serving, and participation procedures.
• Uniform check, volleyballs if required, lineup or rotation sheets, clipboard, and pens.
• A starting plan plus a written participation plan that fits your program’s rules and commitments.

Give warm-up a simple purpose

Players need to move, contact the ball, serve, and communicate. Avoid introducing a new technical lesson minutes before the match.

• Begin with movement and partner ball control as space allows.
• Progress to passing, setting, and controlled attacking contacts.
• Make time for serves from the match distance and serve-receive organization.
• Finish by confirming the first rotation and bench assignments.

Keep the pre-match talk short

Remind players of the behaviors they can control rather than giving a speech about winning.

Coach the next action

During the match, use short cues players recognize from practice. After an error, direct attention toward the next serve, starting position, or communication job.

• Track serving order, substitutions, timeouts, and the participation plan consistently.
• Use timeouts for one correction and one confidence-building reminder.
• Give bench players observation, encouragement, readiness, and tracking responsibilities.
• Model calm communication with officials and confirm procedures respectfully when necessary.

Close the match well

Bring the team together after required sportsmanship and equipment responsibilities are complete.

• Recognize one behavior that reflected the team’s values or practice focus.
• Name one next step without reviewing every mistake.
• Confirm the next practice or communication and release players through the correct pickup process.
