How to Teach Serving to Beginner Volleyball Players
Help more players serve in bounds without turning practice into a long line of misses.
What matters most
Serving is a closed skill: the player controls the start of every repetition. That makes a consistent routine more important than power. Begin close enough for successful contact, then move back as the motion becomes repeatable.
Start with a repeatable routine
A routine reduces extra movement and gives the player a familiar reset after a miss.
- Face the target and choose a consistent starting stance.
- Hold the ball calmly and take one breath before beginning.
- Use the same step, toss, and contact rhythm on every attempt.
- Finish balanced and watch the serve before retrieving another ball.
Keep the overhand toss small
Many beginner serving problems begin with a toss that is too high, behind the body, or drifting across the player.
Build contact before distance
Use a line closer to the net that fits the player’s current strength and coordination, if local rules and the practice setup allow it.
- Serve to a partner or wall target from a short distance.
- Serve over the net from a successful starting line.
- Move back a small amount after several controlled serves.
- Return closer when the motion breaks down repeatedly.
Create safe, active serving lanes
Serving practice can become unsafe when players retrieve balls through active lanes. Establish a clear signal and retrieval pattern before anyone serves.
- Place two or three servers in each lane with space between groups.
- Players behind a server wait outside the swing path.
- Retrieve only on the coach’s signal or from a protected side route.
- Use targets and partner feedback so waiting players still have a job.
Add pressure carefully
Once players can serve in bounds, add targets, team totals, or a serve-and-enter-the-court transition. Avoid elimination games that give struggling servers fewer repetitions.
