How to run each block

01

Down-Ball Warm-Up

6 minutes

  • Use controlled down balls and keep groups small enough that every player moves often.

Say this: See the contact. | Give the next player time.

02

Winners (Small Court)

12 minutes

  • Play 2v2 with four players or 3v3 with six.
  • Start with an easy ball across the net and progress to serving.

Say this: Everyone plays every skill. | Use the open court.

Transition: Keep pairs together and add a passing target.

03

Seams and Names

10 minutes

  • Use two passers, one server, and one target; rotate every five balls.

Say this: Short-right, deep-left. | The call confirms the rule.

Transition: Keep the same small teams and allow a brief second-contact modification.

04

Catch-Set Volleyball

12 minutes

  • Allow the caught second ball only long enough for players to understand spacing, then remove it.

Say this: First ball creates time. | Move after every contact.

Transition: Remove the catch and continue with live scoring.

05

Three-Contact Challenge

15 minutes

  • Award a bonus point for a playable first contact and three-contact attempt.

Say this: Everyone has a job. | Solve the next ball together.

06

Small-team close

5 minutes

  • Ask each player to recognize one helpful play by a teammate.

Say this: Be specific and positive.

Coach throughout

  • Small attendance is an opportunity for more game-like repetitions and feedback.
  • Keep instruction brief and return players to 2v2 or 3v3 quickly.
  • Rotate roles so every player passes, sets, attacks, and defends.

Make it fit

  • With four players, play 2v2 across a narrow court.
  • With no net, use a rope or floor line as the boundary.
  • For new players, slow the entry, shorten the court, or briefly catch the second ball-then return to live contacts.
Close with this

"A small group means every player matters on every ball. Use the extra touches to become more confident and more connected."
